ChristianAudio.com Calvin Giveaway/Contest!

Recently, I've been so blessed by ChristianAudio and as I've been listening to their free giveaways (and purchasing their excellent products) I've come under conviction to help out some brothers and sisters in Christ.

What with it being Calvin's 500th birthday soon and with the excellent specials Christian Audio is running on Calvin's books, it is time to give away some audiobooks.

No, I'm not doing this to promote my blog, doug's blog, jordan's blog, or 1reformedrebellion.ning.com, I'm doing this because I honestly believe that God should be both made known and glorified.

---

This is a very simple contest, you don't have to post anything about my blog or tweet or post on facebook, if you want to publicize what is happening here please feel free to do so.

In fact, I really do need bloggers, tweeters, and facebookers to help me get the word out about this contest/giveaway as my blog is, to put it bluntly, not very widely-read.

I hope that this will encourage a spirit of giving among us "calvinists" towards those who are just beginning to see this great gospel for which we live in and for.

In this concise introduction to Calvin's life and thought, Elwood offers an insightful and accessible overview of Calvin's key teachings within his historical context. The trials and travails Calvin encountered as he ministered and taught in Geneva are given with special attention to theological controversies associated with the Trinity and predestination. Elwood indicates the ways that Calvinism developed and its influence in today's world. Illustrations are interspersed throughout the text and humorously illuminate key points providing an engaging introduction to this important theologian. Christopher Elwood is Associate Professor of Historical Theology at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. He is the author of The Body Broken: The Calvinist Doctrine of the Eucharist and the Symbolization of Power in Sixteenth-Century France.

"Let the first rule of right prayer then be, to have our heart and mind framed as becomes those who are entering into converse with God." So begins John Calvin and his treatise on prayer. These seminal writings are from his Magnus Opus The Institutes of the Christian Religion. Prayer as Calvin describes it is not giddy, and he goes on to give Scriptural definitions of proper thought, engagement, and attitude. What do the roles of patience and self-denial play in the role of the Christian life and what does Christian piety look like? What should our views be of the present life and the future life? John Calvin is one of the giants of Christian history. These two sections of The Institutes guide us ever so thoughtfully and gracefully into his theology and practice of Christian living. Wonderfully narrated by James Adams, these are sure to both challenge and encourage one to a fuller devotion to Christ.

John Piper fires readers’ passion for the centrality and supremacy of God by unfolding Calvin’s exemplary zeal for the glory of God. God rests all too lightly on the church’s mind in our time. Consequently, the self-saturation of his people has made God and his glory auxiliary, and his majesty has all but disappeared from the modern evangelical world. John Calvin saw a similar thing in his day, and it was at the root of his quarrel with Rome. Nothing mattered more to Calvin than the centrality, supremacy, and majesty of the glory of God. His aim, he wrote, was to "set before [man], as the prime motive of his existence, zeal to illustrate the glory of God”—a fitting banner over all of the great Reformer’s life and work. “The essential meaning of Calvin’s life and preaching," writes John Piper, “is that he recovered and embodied a passion for the absolute reality and majesty of God. Such is the aim and burden of this book as well.” As Piper concisely unfolds this predominant theme in Calvin’s life, he seeks to fire every Christian’s passion for the centrality and supremacy of God, so that God’s self-identification in Exodus 3 as “I am who I am” becomes the sun in our solar system too.
